Per my Ford parts book
48-702475 Hinge pin <upper and lower Ford> <lower only Mercury>
99A-7022840 Hinge pin, upper <Mercury>
On 1941-48 which had a similar hidden upper hinge, exposed lower hinge the pin diameter on the upper hinge was larger than the typical Ford 9/32, perhaps 5/16 not sure.

You can order hinge pins from C&G. They list pins for your '40 Merc in four different sizes. Call them at 800/266-0470. You may need oversize, so check your pins before you call. The prices run between one and eight dollars. Be sure to request their catalog. It is great!
