The tank sealer we put in the gas tank on Dad's '40 convertible about 15 years ago is turning loose and so Dad wants to replace the tank. We'd appreciate any input on plastic vs. steel vs. stainless steel and any recommendations on suppliers. Thanks!

i used "tanks" brand both steel and plastic and they are well built products, i would go with a steel one if it was up to me though

I installed a Drake steel tank in my '40 Fordor. The fit was a little snug - had to do some trimming, but otherwise I have been very pleased.

I didn't like the 40 drakes tank they were off location and i re formed so i could put tank on without removeing body. They claim you must remove body.Since they they must have fixed the problem i bought mine about 5 years ago.I would go with the steel tank.

I bought a Drake Stainless when he had them on sale a couple of years ago. Sure looks nice. Will never have to buy another one. My other tank was great on the outside and I had two coats of sealer applied after a good cleaning. Looked like crap so rather than take a chance I bought the stainless.

I think the plastic vs steel tank may be better answered by asking what are your intentions for the car? If it's to retain originality and show then go steel, it may be difficult but it can be replaced. If the intention is a safe driver, then a plastic tank will be easier and never rust. Let the next guy install the steel tank. OMHO LouB.

I have Tanks poly's in my 46 and 53, very pleased with the product. Only down side to poly in my opinion is keeping exhaust a couple of inches away. Stainless is certainly a good choice if money is of no concern.

I installed a polyethelene tank in my 40 Ford. It fits very easily but it is closer to dual exhaust pipes than stock. Also there are no cage nuts on the tank. I glued on my own to make it easier to bolt in. Stock 40 Ford gas tank sending unit does not fit the poly tank. I had to modify the tank. That is a big negative. Fuel line does not exit from the bottom of the tank like the stock tank. If I had to do it again, I would spend the money for a stainless tank. Poly holds 15 1/2 gallons. On poly there is no drain on the bottom of the tank like the stock one. Plus you have to install the safety "anti spill" vent that comes with the tank.

I bought a Drakes tank for my 37' a year ago and it was in every way formed the same as the one that came with the car... fit like a glove!
I would use steel because my friend has a poly one in his 36' and it deformed with the heat and cold(sides sucked in) and now it dose not hold as much fuel as it did when it was new.

WOW. Mine in my 46 has been there at least 12 years and shows no sign of that.
