1940 Ford starter binding

Twice since a starter rebuilt, the engine "locked-up" when engaging
the starter. In some way, the starter gets in a bind with the flywheel
ring gear. I "unlock it" by rocking the car back and forth while in
hi-gear. Can anyone tell me what's the problem?

You got two choices, put the old starter gear back on the starter and maybe get a few more miles, or pull the engine and replace the flywheel ring gear. If you are an old coot like me you can guess the choice.

If you rebuilt using a replacement old style (exposed spring) Bendix, replace with the newer type. Mac's # 32-26190-1. Clean but no lube on the starter shaft.
Also be sure you are using the little starter support brace that goes from the starter mounting bolt to the adjacent oil pan bolt. The stronger starter may be twisting on its thin mount enough to bind, and the brace can prevent that.
