1940 ford shifting

Its most likely that your shifting mechanism is at fault. Probably in the steering column part. An easy check is the 4 shift rod bushings. The rubber and brass buhings may be badly worn. Naturally, make sure your clutch is adjusted correctly so that the clutch is fully disengaging when the clutch pedal is depressed. There could be other potential problems too....
