1940 Ford (Lug stud) Question

Quick question for you gurus. I am looking for new wheel studs for my front hubs on a 40' Ford. I know I can buy them online... when I cross reference the numbers at the local part stores they all come back with the same dimension studs but they are all serrated. Will these work or do I need to wait a week and get some in the mail?

The original type studs were smooth and not serrated and placed in the hub then the drum then the stud was swaged in place to hold everything together. Do you have the drum separated from the hub? I would mic the hole then find a stud that would be a press fit in the hub. Then you can slide the drum over the hub like the later model cars have.

i use the modern studs too, and then put an index mark on one stud and the hole it goes to so they are put back in the same spot when removed.

There can be another confusion with the type of hub/drum that is installed. These things can be mixed & matched when a drum went bad in the past. I'm referring to inside hubs and outside hubs in relation to the drums. There were four different studs used, according to the stud chart in the green bible, in the time frame from 1940 thru 1948. As long as you get ones to mach dimensionally what the hub/drum you have had originally, you are good to go.

Or you can go to Speedway and buy new drums with modern studs. Not at all expensive. My old drums were shot. Most 1940 drums are.
