My battery keeps going dead on my 1940 Ford,It has a stock system with 6 Volt and pos ground. Can someone help me with some trouble shooting ideas. Thanks

Look at the 2 brushes, they are the most likely source as they are a wearing part... You might take something that's non conductive and try pushing them into the armature while the engine's running, see if that starts it to working again.
A volt meter would help, but you can watch the headlights to see if they will brighten when the engine rpm increases...

In addition to the above suggestion. I would re polarize the gen and make sure the voltage regulator has that little ground wire to one of the screws. Does the voltmeter on the dash show a discharge?
If you have a radio, make sure it is OFF not just turned down. There should be no draw on the battery when you connect the ground cable to the battery post (check with a volt meter while the cable is off). If there is a draw, something is ON or you have a short somewhere. You don't mention if the gen and or voltage regulator has been replaced recently or is old. Just my 2cents, these are what I would check. Good luck.

The voltmeter in dash has red, amber, green ,red, with battery charged it never gets out of the amber the reg and gen are fairly new. Thanks

What are your driving habits? I had a "new" voltage regulator on my truck. It was over charging the battery causing them to die early. I didn't drive the truck enough to realize what was going on, and I always unhooked the battery when I put it away. I just chalked it up to it being a 6-volt thing.
