Hi to all,

I am working on a 40 Ford, the problem I have is the car runs great at idle, and driving straight down the road. As soon as I try and go up a hill, it starves for fuel. The tank is 3/4 full, brand new carb. fuel pressure 2 p.s.i. ignition system is perfect no electrical problems. Any help would be great.

Make sure the flex hose is in good condition,it can suck air if its not. Also you might try blowing the fuel line back to the tank from the firewall,be sure and remove the gas cap if you do this. One other culprit could be the gasket underneath the lid on the fuel pump if you have pump with the steel bowl.

Thank you for the info, I will try blowing out the lines. Is 2 p.s.i. enough fuel pressure?

The pump may have pressure but does it have good vollum? Remove the fuel line from the carb, crank the motor and see if a good stream is pumping into a container. It could have a half plugged fuel line back to the tank. Unhook the line at the pump, remove the gas cap, take an air hose and blow back into the tank. Walt

ok thanks to all of you, I will try all of your suggestions and let you know.

Update,

I found an electric fuel pump, traced the wiring and turned on the switch. The car runs better but still have a problem of running out of gas on a hill. Is there a way to increase the volume/pressure of the pump? I did not see anywhere on the pump were you can increase fuel pressure.

Still sounds like a fuel line thats partly plugged. You might want to make sure the float level is not set too low in the carb causing it to starve for fuel.

Once again, the pump may have the pressure but not the volume. What happens on a flat road? Can you floor it and will it speed up or will it fall flat?? How steep is the hill? The timing also could not advance properly?? Alot of questions to solve your problem.

Update on 40 ford fuel problem!
Removed fuel line from back of electric fuel pump, which is 18 inches forward of the tank on the frame rail. Blew out fuel line into tank, removed sending unit inspected fuel tank, minor rust no flakes. Put everthing back together, road tested ran pefect, tank you all for your help.

I would install a inline filter between the pump and carb. Or it will most likely happen again in time if you say you have rust in tank. ken ct.
