I was compairing my 1940 Ford Coupe to another coupe. For the first time I noticed the ash tray was different. I was told this was because they made an early and late car. Are there any more differences? Is it true that there was an early and late 40?

Yes it's true. The early production 40's had ashtrays with a knob on the bottom front that you push in and slide the ashtray upward behind the dash. See photo below. The later production 40's had a knob at the top that you pull toward you and the ash tray tilts outward.

There are other differences. If you have a deluxe, the early cars had 1 less louver next to the grille on each side. Kube could list them all but you should have his book anyway. It is sold by the National EFV8 Club on their website.
There were early/late differences in most model years.

There was simply a mid-year change to how the ash trays open. Early the lid slides up, later the whole ash tray pivots out. I’m not aware of other running changes, but probably were some. We will have to wait for Kube to tell us.

There is also a difference in the transmission housing. The vent for the trans case is more like a "rib" running on top of the housing. I'm sure there are a lot more.
