1940 Ford Brake Shoes:

That is the way the cylinder was when I took it off. What kind of issues would this cause if one side was not set correctly?

If that was the case the little piston would be pushed to far out by the force of the brake fluid and you would have fluid all over your brakes. Plus, your brakes wouldn,t work very well, if at all.

What is the easiest way to install rear hub back on axle and get the key seated correctly.I noticed the key has one end that is tapered.Must this section be clean of grease?

40ford: Here's the answer about hub installation:

Be sue to read all of this thread, especially post #32 and #37 that is about key orientation.

Also, take a look at the first photo in the thread below and then read the entire thread about axle nut torque which has been discussed at length on Fordbarn. Just do a SEARCH on "Rear Axle Nut Torque".

Thanks 19Fordy,what I am trying to understand is do you install hub on and line up slots and then install the key or do you go ahead and install key on axle then slip hub on?Sorry for beating this horse again!

Install key properly down into slot. Make sure it is parallel with the taper angle of axle. In other words, make sure the key is NOT installed TOO FAR inboard, which would raise the inboard end of key stock because of taper in key slot. Slide drum/hub onto axle. Coop

.

Folow v8"s advice.

Place key in slot with taper side down and inboard and fitting in the the back of the slot so the key will sit parallel with the keyway in the hub when you slide on the hub. Then slide the hub on. It should slide right on by hand without having to force it to fit the key. In fact, the key may "self adjust" a little in the slot so as to accomodate the hub as it slides on. Make sure there are no burrs on the key.

Go here and scroll down to page 62 for photo of keyway inserted in axle.

When the drums and wheels are on the car and you are ready to torque the axle nut, tighten it up as much as you can with the car the engine off and the car in gear. Then lower the wheels so they touch the ground and tighten axle nut to recommended torque specs.
There are lots of opinions on this so do a SEARCH on FORDBARN.

Just wanted to say thanks for all your help 19Fordy.I got the wheel cylinder mounted and drum back on and torqued.I didn't even try to switch shoes around and straightened out this screwed up mess.My drum is worn way beyond limits on that side,Never could get maybe a 1/4 of pedal. So disgusted with this mess.Just waiting on KiWinUS to call me so I can send it to him!
