I have tried to install the new style Axle housing seal on each side of the housing and both times the spring on the inside came out when I took the installation tool out. Then I cant get my hands or any tools into the space to get them back in. Anybody have any suggestions or insight? I had grease on them, the second one even more so, to try to keep this from happening.

Cbass

Cbass, do you have the lip ("open end") of the seal facing inwards; towards the bell of the housing?
I have installed numerous seals and never once had the issue you describe.

Since they are still in the housing I am going to use another thread that has pictures. I have the first picture in this thread against the housing on the brake hub side. The second picture shows the side of the seal that is toward the center. Did I do this wrong somehow? I though the open lip faced the center so as to seal the oil in?

Apparently I am too knew to post a link but if you search Rear Axle Seal Installation by Dennis/Arkansas you will find the pictures.

The open end should face the oil as you had done.
I wonder if the seals you had obtained are of poor quality. I just can't imagine why this is happenings.
Are you using that tool that is at the end of a pipe? Placing the seal over that?

Yes, I have the tool that threads on to a pipe. Very well could have been a bad set, I am sure that most are coming from the same factory but if anybody has a suggestion for better one from a specific place, I am all ears since I will have to get two more now.

Thanks
Cbass

I had acquired some good quality seals from Carpenter.
I would not use old seals made of leather.
