1940 door handle install

Hi - I have aftermarket exterior door handles for my 1940 coupe. I do not have any originals to copy (car came to me as a pile of parts). I understand there is a notch near the end of the square shaft. Can someone post a picture or give me dimensions to make the correct notch on my handles? I have searched and think I understand the installation procedure on coordinating interior handle with exterior handle installation. Just not sure what to do with shaft. Thanks, Brian

Most reproduction handles do not have the notch. They will work just fine without the notch. Installation is a little simpler without the notch. The notch is sort of a safety feature to prevent someone from being able to remove handle and enter vehicle from the outside. You have to wiggle both handles to open door with notch.

Thanks for the response. I'm still not getting it. I was just out playing with the handle and couldn't get it to catch. Without the notches it seems to slide right out. What is the function of the threaded screw hole in the base? The aftermarket handles only have a short allen screw in them (metric threads). This is a little frustrating and may I say humbling as well.

Lawson has already helped you. The handle will be locked in its hole when you install a screw in the threaded hole in the handle base. I use a flat head screw rather than an allen screw of proper theads to lock the handle in. Of course the screw enters the door jamb when installed. I hope this helps you! Tom
