1940 Deluxe Springs

Heys guys Im posting my first thread! Her it goes, I own a 1940 Deluxe business coupe. I'm doing a frame off resto and currently assembeling the chassis. My car came with 12 leafs in the front spring! and 9 in the rear. Is this normal? Everything I have read says it should have 9 or 10. There were no sleeves over the springs either as a deluxe should have.

This car was parked in a barn, No kidding, in 1969 here in Minnesota. From what I have been told and can see, this car is original. Im looking at lowering the car some, more in the front for that hot rod stance. How many springs do I remove front and rear? Im going to run a 4 in drop axle. Ive heard stories of guys having the springs in and out a lot of times before getting it right. Is there a good place to start since the body is off the frame right now?

On the front I run 9-10 leaves and use a reverse eye main leaf. I never buy a new complete spring. I use all the Ford leaves with a new reverse eye main. I also use the lipped teflon between the leaves. Make sure you grind the bottom edges of each leaf so they do not continue to dig into the teflon. As you take the spring apart you will see that over time each leaf has dug a groove into the leaf below.
On the rear I would find a spring shop to de-arch the spring. I don't use long shackles as they affect the stability of the rear end of the car. Most truck shops that work on truck springs can dearch the spring. Tell them how much you want to lower the car and it will turn out just right.

I used a set of Posies reverse eye springs frt and rear and they are direct replace and will lower it about 1-2"
