1940 Brake Adjustment Cam Removal

This my first post. Searched a while and couldn’t find the solution. I’m just starting a 1940 Deluxe Coupe teardown and rebuild and am currently taking apart the front suspension and brakes. I’ve got the backing plate off and disassembled except for the adjustment cams. What is the trick to getting them and the bolts and springs off? I am stripping it all down to blast and paint and really want to break it down completely.

You have too grind them off. The springs are under very high pressure. Be careful as they can hurt you. There is no easy way to put them back on. You would have to rig up a clamp to apply the pressure and then weld them.
Very few people remove them.

Do a search, there is someone on the barn that sells kits to put these back on if you take them off.

Thanks. I’ll be leaving them on there. Just blast what I can. Haven’t heard of ospho, I’ll have to look it up.

It's a metal surface conditioner.

"When applied to rusted surfaces, it resists/retards rust in chemical change on drying to a tough, hard surface ready for priming. Paint jobs will last longer after an application of OSPHO because subsequent paint coating securely attaches itself so that moisture and oxygen normally do not attack the metal. Water-thin, covers a larger area than paint and goes on easily. Equally effective for exterior or interior."

Wash those plates down and blast them. Wash them down again, prime them and paint them. Those adjusters are fine as long as they are not frozen. JMHO

That’s the plan. They aren’t frozen. Amazingly nothing from the backing plate outboard was frozen. The bearings even look new.
