1939 Mercury vent window

Those are accessory 'wind wings' I don't know if they were a Ford approved accessory but I've seen them on '39 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury closed cars.

They are listed as draft deflectors and were a Ford approved accessory. I have a set on my 39 Ford Std. Coupe and I think they were for the 37, 38 and 39 closed cars. Very hard to find and if you do, very expensive.

sorry pictures didn't take, the barn keeps saying up load failed so will email them to you

As to Planojc post, the ones for the Fords WILL NOT work on Mercury's, Different shape. We have a NOS set on our town sedan if you give me your email I will send you pictures (they are too large to upload here). I have picture of the original box, original price tag, and fitted to the car. My dad has been collecting Ford/Mercury's since 1966 and we have only seen 3 sets of deflectors. One pair he passed up in the 70's, one pair on a car seen here in the local region and the pair we have on our car, extremely hard to come by for the Mercury.

Thank you all guys!! I'm building a clone of my grandfather's cousin's Merc, and this is a part I need to collect for it :) Hopefully if I'll get Rockfla's pictures, I can make a set.

For those who are interested, this is how the car was after it was chopped in 1946.

Here is an original picture of a Display Board of Accessories that were available for the 1939 Fords and Mercurys. You can see that the Draft Deflectors for the Fords and Mercurys are slightly different shape. The Mercury part is on teh left, under the Accessory Full Stainless Steel Hubcap.

I have them on my 39CS.PIA can,t clean window behind them. And if they are a bit loose they rattle against the window. But they do work with the window down. Phil

The frames for the 38/39 Ford and 39 mercury closed cars are very similar and could be made to fit either.
However the glass is a completely different shape.
I sold that NOS pair of Mercury ones to Bob Davis in the USA several years ago - it was mentioned in the V8 Times.
I still have several of the original glasses for the 39 Mercury - even though they have the Ford script on them, as well as a NOS complete 39 Mercury - one side only.

@swoopnz,

A pair of which??? FORD or MERCURY??? I'm not sure on the Ford vent windows but as I stated before, we've been collecting V8's for almost 50 years now and only seen three set of Mercury vent windows, one set on another car, one set we passed on many many years ago and the set we just recently purchased. The Mercury ones are "very thin on the ground".

Another point, perhaps others can speak to this point for the Mercury vent windows, I believe they only fit the Sedans? This original thread was started about putting them on a 39 Coupe, which is pictured (and we have one as well) but we're still scratching our heads as to how they were fitted to the coupe???? The inside surround of the sedan is different than the coupe and don't know how they got them attached to the inside frame???? Again maybe other can clarify, that issue.

After comparing the pictures of these Vent Windows, it is obvious that on Closed Cars, they are attached at the Top and Bottom, which would make them fairly secure. However, with the Vent Windows on an Open car, like this 39 Convertible (previous Post), they are only attached at the Bottom. Imagine the strain on them when travelling at high speed, with the only attachment at the bottom? Also, when the door was slammed shut, that would add extra pressure on the mounting plate.

I would like to buy a pair of the type on the red '39 Ford convertible.
Original or Jerry Emery reproductions.
I have a pair of '39 Mercury convertible ones that appear to have been cast in alloy from the originals.
One is Ok - the other has a damaged base -repairable - but a lot of work.
They have 3 attaching points at the base.
They are fairly sturdily constructed.
