1939 Ignition lock

Does anyone know, does they key have to stay in when the ignition switch is in the "on" position? Or can you have the ignition on or off and only use the key to lock the ignition?

The column has to be unlocked before you can switch the ignition to "on".

Key will only come out with everything OFF. Switch off, column locked.
