1939 ford windshield will not open

Those windshield regulators were mounted where the ravages of time were not good to them. Corrosion is the likely cause of your problem. I think there are a few vendors that frequent the barn that might be able to help with parts for that assembly but am not shure. Hopefully one will add their info here.

Frequently it is the rubber on the windshield frame is stuck to the windshield opening. Take a piece of plastic, like a plastic spatula, and work it between the rubber and the body. When you can get a piece of string to go through the opening, run the string around the windshield rubber/opening, and free it up from the body. Then try your windshield regulator. Easy does it as you do not want to strip gears. If it opens, great. If not you will need to remove the regulator and try to free it up with ATF fluid and Acetone or some similar penitrating lubricant. Good luck.

Thanks for the input..the rubber is not stuck so will focus on lots of lube on the regulator..I have a spare regulator if necessary

I have same problem. Only my truck is a 1937. How do you remove the regulator handle,or knob? How can I remove the entire unit from the truck?

On my 37 passenger car there is no set screw. On the back side of the dash there is a washer that is held on by a snap ring. The snap ring drops into a groove on the shank of the regulator handle. This snap ring holds the handle on the regulator shaft. It's very similiar to the system that holds the door handles on the later model cars.

I had the same problem on my 39 P/U and found the handle turns CCW if I remember correctly to open. G,M.
