I wanted to give a shout out and thanks to John for the repair on my 39 deluxe trunk handle. I dropped off the handle at the Charlotte auto fair and he had it ready for me the next weekend. I was able to stop by his house on the way to the 1st Goodguys show in Raleigh NC and pick it up.He repaired the lock to match my glove box key, fixed the key cover, and polished it to a mirror finish.

Thanks John for the great work!

is there any diagram as to how the lock will work? i am wondering if my handle is missing any type of pin or something? i have just taken my handle to a local locksmith and we are wondering how it works?

If you have a working key that just doesn't activate the the slide latch, you may have a sheared cam pin on the internal cam cylinder. It can be serviced relatively easy. Send me a PM if you are interested in lock/handle service.

John did a great job getting me a lock cylinder and modifying it where it can be used in the unlock position on my 1940 Ford trunk handle. Thanks

Does the 40 trunk lock have to be locked before you can remove the key?

Mine does which means the trunk cannot be left unlocked without the key in it which is most annoying.

Hi 47 MERC,
Yes that is the problem with the 40 trunk handle. John fixed me right up with a hurd cylinder & keys and he modified it to work either way locked or unlocked. The only problem was my Drake handle I had to grind inside to get the hurd cyl to fit and work, but now its great not to have to lock it to get the key out.

Unfortunately, the Drake handles do have to be slightly modified to accommodate the OEM cylinders, but since the non-OEM cylinders tend to fail, it is worth the effort. Also with a little more planning, the OEM glove box lock can be modified/re-pinned to match the trunk lock, eliminating another key.

Thanks Guys! I am in British Columbia Canada so NC USA is a little ways away unfortunately. I do have a spare glove box and key and lock etc that I will have a look at. And will print this out and bring to the locksmith.
