With regard to hub cap fitment, are the '39 Ford & Merc wide five wheels the same?? I am considering the optional Ford Spyder as an alternate cap on my Merc.

I think they are the same, the only difference might be that the Merc is a wider wheel like 4.5 inch. You might want to give Bill Hirsch a call (they re-pop the spiders) and should know if they will fit the Merc wheels.

Vic,
Thanks for the response. I actually contacted Bill Hirsch first, as that's where I would get the covers if I do this. He said he was INCLINED to think they are the same.

I was thinking about getting a pair of Spiders to put on the front wheels of my '39 CS. I've been trying (with no luck so far) to locate a pair of '38 Lincoln Zephyr hub caps for the '39 CS...

Just a heads up on spyders: I've seen repop spyders that look like they've been through the wars.

I believe that the repop spyders of some years ago were good quality. Just sayin'.

Then it's easy. Just buy them from him with a money back guarantee if they don't fit. He can't have a problem with that.
Good luck,
Phil

Hi there, are you aware that Ford Motor Company offered the equivalent of a Spyder Hubcap for the 1939 Mercurys? They are full Stainless Steel & larger in actual Diameter than the Standard 39 Mercury Hubcaps, but they are the same size on the inside where they attach to the wheel. The attached Photos show this Accessory 1939 Mercury Hubcap. For comparison, I am also attaching a photo of the two hubcaps together, so you can see the size difference. So, there is no need to hunt down a set off Ford Spyder Hubcaps, just locate a set of these Accessory 1939 Mercury Hubcaps. They look great.

Mercman,
Wow,..... thanks for taking the time to respond and post all those great pics!!
Did not know about the accessory Merc caps, they look great (your car looks great) My first choice would be a set of those, ........ I suspect they might be not an easy find, but I will post some WTB ads on the appropriate boards. Thanks again.

Regarding the repop spyder caps from Bob Hirsch, I have not seen one yet however Bob describes them as "show quality, perfect fit".

Happy New Year to All!

Hi Shoebox, Unfortunately, that 39 Merc is not mine, but a friends. Regarding the Ford Spyder Hubcaps, there are 3 different kinds. There are the 36 & 37 which are the same shape but the V8 & outer ring are Recessed on the 36 Spyders & raised on the 37 Spyders. The 38 Spyders are a completely different shape & were carried over to 1939 without any change. It seems odd that the 38 Spyders are correct on the 39 Fords. These Accessory 39 Mercury Hubcaps do show up occasionally on eBay. I alerted a friend in Australia about it & he was the high bidder. He is also trying to get a set of these Acc 39 Merc Hubcaps & is achieving his goal one by one as they appear. Best of luck with your search. They are available.

Notice I didn't specify Hirsch spyders. For all I know, there may be another supplier. Don't want to get caught up in a lawsuit here.

For further information on 1939 Mercury Hubcaps, checkout the latest Nov/Dec 2014 issue of V8 Times, produced by the Early Ford V8 Club of America. There is an excellent article on 1939 Mercury Hubcaps. All up, there are 4 different hubcaps to suit these first year Mercurys. The very early Mercurys had "Ford Mercury" on the hubcaps, but this was changed to just "Mercury" very early in production.

These Accessory Full Stainless Steel 1939 Mercury Hubcaps look good when fitted to a car, as shown in this photo of an Australian model.

According to my Ford of Canada parts book there is only one type wheel listed for all pickups and passenger cars from 1936 to 39. So that would indicate the Mercury and Ford used the same wheel.

Shoebox, I had to buy a replacement spyder cap and ended up buying one from Bill Hirsch. The quality and grade is fantastic. They are not flimsy metal and really feel like the original. I can't really tell the two apart. The price is up there($175) but worth it in my opinion.

Fryguy,

Nice of you to post, .......... I just love the look of those Spyder caps also, so I just recently ordered ONE to see just how perfect they are. Like you said WOW! it is like jewelry, it is just beautiful, I had it on a towel on the living room coffee table for days after getting it. Now I am just saving up for the other THREE:).
