Are these stock clocks electric or wind up? If wind up is there any other source to cause a battery to go dead when car is not in use. Of course I assume there is no electrical short. Jon Laing

According to the Early Ford V8 1938 1939 (restoration) Book, wind up clocks were standard on the 38 and 39 deluxe models. 1937 had both wind up and electric. You should be able to tell if yours is electric or windup as the windup only had an electrical connection to its light.

I have drained a battery by leaving the key on or not turning the radio completely off. Other possibillities are a stuck brake light switch, heater or turn signal left on etc. but these should become obvious when you recharge the battery.

Without question, they are wind up. Some folks think they are electric as there is a source wire for the light bulb and another for the (bulb) ground.

On Windup - Anyone know how often do the need to be wound? is it daily?
Typically these early clocks were advertised to be "30 hour" clocks. To that effect, yes, they need to be wound daily. One word of caution: Do NOT over wind them.

Jon: The Deluxe clock is wind up with a light. I got a replacement wire and light and wire from Dennis Carpenter that was easy to replace and looks very original. Good luck. Keep winding it I go 7 winds. TEB
