What are the correct female dovetails for a 1939 Ford Conv Coupe? I seem to have the wrong ones B-702574-RK pictured. The top one pops out. Is the correct one for the Conv 48-702574-RK? How do they stay in place?

That does not appear to be correct. Look in the Dennis Carpenter catalog.
48-7022040-K is correct.

The "long" end is exposed while the "short" end is pressed below a metal tab within the pillar. You'll see it. A flat blade screwdriver works well to remove / install.

Hey MikeNY, I'd communicated with Karl Wescott and he thinks I may have misled you.
The man is quite sharp and has me wondering if in fact I did.

Do you have an old one from either door?

While I expect Kube's answer is correct... We had a customer come in with the dovetail from a 1939 Mercury convertible, very similar (but slightly different) than the repro B- (which looked like it would work). The 48- definitely would NOT work in that car.

So there is a "gotcha" out there... whether all Mercury, some Mercury, or a limited production different part on a few Fords (aka the plastic jaws found on some 1937-38 Ford dovetails), or a convertible thing. I don't know. Just a heads up.

I might have the originals, need to check. I did buy the B- dove tails 15 yrs ago for a reason but cannot remember.

1938-39 Ford book says on page 2-13 that Convertible Coupe uses same female dovetails as closed cars, 78-702570. These are riveted on?

Those are reproductions of the "plastic jaw" version of dovetail that was used in PARTIAL production 1937-38. The vast majority of the remainder used die cast jaws carried over from 1935, and used through 1940. The jaws DO NOT interchange between the two different housings. And then there is that odd 1939 Mercury convertible one...

I recall the originals were not plastic, there also seems to be no tabs to hold the dovetails in place like in picture 52 and the B-pilars are in excellent original shape. My car is really early, 18-4665354, engine built 6 Sept 1938.
