1936 wind out screen fasteners question

I've got a '36 5 w coupe that i bought as an unfinished hot rod project some years ago.

When partially dismantling the screen wind out mechanism (can't recall why but i think the fixings to the screen frame ends were siezed) i distinctly recall the hardware that formed the pivot points on each arm was of a shouldered type (like a minature shoulder bolt) with an external circlip to retain it.

Somehow these went missing :o. I've searched for replacements without sucess. I'm temporarily using a couple of small bolts but these foul on the screen aperture when opening, so i don't bother openng it.

I've looked at any number of replacement mechanisms and note that they all seemd to be of a rivetted style. The screw part of my mechanism is in good order and i'm reluctant to simply replace the whole deal, plus they're fairly costly items too, if / when they become available.

Does any of this make sense to anyone? Although the parts i had fit and work there's noting to say these are '36 parts for sure. Or might the stud and circlip type be off another model? Or, best thing would be to simply be pointed in the right direction for replacements fixings!

All ideas welcome!
Thanks in advance

Chris

All the '35-'36 windshield crank-out mechanisms I've come across have been riveted. Thinking about it, all the crank-out that I have had from '33 to '39 have had riveted pivots. Maybe was someone's previous repair. I'd just make some new pivots and be done.

I replaced the complete windshield/windscreen wind out mechanism with one of Bob Drake's new reproduction mechanisms. I also installed one of his rubber gaskets with molded corners. The gasket was very easy to install. The new winding mechanism fit well and works perfectly. The new rubber gasket seals very well against the opening surrounding the windshield. It was great to be able to crank the windshield open to get some fresh air circulation on a hot touring day and also to be able to wind the windshield back in place and get a good seal during a rain storm.

Thanks for the responses guys.

To be honest i'd never even considered that mine were anything but as factory. If they are repaired / modified somebody did a very neat job indeed.

I'll look out for the rivets (any pointers / links?) and retry specialist fasteners stockists.

Cheers
Chris

If you go onto the internet, you wil find companies that supply rivets and hand tools. They also have on their home/spec. pages the dimensions of the rivets so that you can be sure of what you getting.

Another option for rivets may be to contact Joe's Antique Auto, 267 W. Hartford Ave., Uxbridge, Massachusetts 01569 USA
Info: 1-508-278-3980, Orders: 1-800-508-3980, Email: joesantique@charter.net
At one time Joe was rebuilding those windscreen wind out mechanisms. If he is still doing this, I'm sure he would have the correct rivets.
