i'm going to replace the hardwood ribs on my 36' roof and have a couple of questions to ask you guys,
what is the friction tape for , some sort of anti-squeak remedy?
2nd, each has a slot head screw a few inches in from the end of each rib, what is the reason for this screw? the screws go up. anti split fix? look factory.
how about one more, the wood looks like hickory or maybe oak, is there something better? i'm a big fan of soft maple for something like this. thanks, kurt
 
I believe you are correct that the friction tape is an anti sqeek device and is from the factory. I also believe that the screw close to the end is indeed a way to prevent splitting of the wood bow, since at that location the bow curves while the wood grain is straight.

Wood Art, the original company, used maple I believe to make new roof bows. I do not know if the existing company uses maple or some other wood.
 
Friction tape is a cloth like tape , sticky on one side. Used back in the day for electrical work, has been (mostly) replaced by today's vinyl electrical tape.


Most auto parts store should have it, if not, try ebay or Amazon.

great info. thank you for your reply. at a glance they look all the same length, but there are three different sizes of these. good thing mine are still intact enough to make patterns from. thanks again, kurt

agreed. the stuff i've got is just like the original. when my dad passed i cleared out his shop and there were a half doz. unused rolls of it.
