I purchased my 36' Ford Truck about a year ago. I have just now found it necessary to add Brake Fluid. I don't know what is presently in the brake system and it appears that DOT 3,4,5 don't mix. Is there some way to determine what is presently in my brake system? Thank you. Scott

DOT 3 is red in color, DOT 5 is blue. Don't know about DOT 4. Fluids can be mixed, but you will lose the desirable qualities if you do. ie: Mixing dot 3 with dot 5, you will have a lower boiling temp, the dot 3 will absorb moisture out of the atmosphere and the dot 3 will remove paint from your car.

why don't you take the oportunity to flush out all the old fluid and add silicon dot5 ???

The norm would have been DOT 3. 3 and 4 mix ok as far as I know, but not with DOT 5 which is silicone
