1936 Ford rear axle screaming under load, what could be the problem???

A noise started to develop about 3 month ago, it started getting worst.
The noise always felt like it was coming from right next to me, so I figured it was the u-joint or that roller bearing, in the torque tube, close to the speedo gear.

A week and a half ago I took the whole rear axle, torque tube, etc apart to check out what could be wrong.

The u-joint and roller bearing looked worn so I replaced them.
Hoping that was it, no such luck.
I drove to a car show and back (400 miles) and I'm thinking the problem is in the rear axle.

I have not taken anything apart again yet, but could it most likely be worn bearings, or the ring and pinion not meshing together right???

BTW, the noise starts at around 55mph and stops when I let off the gas.

What could be my problem??? Bearings, bent axle, worn gears.

Expert help needed.

Thanks, Chris

The symptoms you describe suggest a gear related issue. That does not however mean the bearings are fine. Worn bearings can lead to improper gear mesh pattern and then galling of gears and subsequent noise which will alter depending on whether they are driving (power on) or on the over-run (power off). Sounds like a rebuild.

:eek:my '34 banjo screamed like crazy under a load, it would make you think it was the ****** at times.

jack up the rear and set the rearend on jack stands, make sure the front wheels are also blocked, fire it up and run thru the gears, mine sounded like it was full of gravel as soon as i got it to start rolling.

You might check the trans coupling for worn universal joints . They sometime show noise at hiher speeds. The noise is tranmitted to other place in the drive lin. Just a thought

I just took the whole thing apart, my only problem is that all the bearing look good, but the ring and pinion show wear. I was hoping for something "obvious".
Could there be a wrong bearing installed, that caused noise???

As I took the pinion out the inner pinion bearing fell apart, that must be it.

I had the same type problem with my whirlpool cabrio. least it was under warranty, now get that pinion bearing put back in.
