1936 Ford hub caps

My hub caps sometimes fly off. They and the wheel clips are bent due to many on-off cycles and rebending. Is there a correct (and incorrect) way to install them? One cap flew off, unnoticed, or?? The hub caps have 5 two inch "notches' on the inner rim. I cannot find a new hub cap at several Early Ford parts houses, or a good on ebay. Any help would be very much appreciated.

It’s not difficult to just replace the hub cap retainer clips. Thirdgen should have them available along with the correct rivets.

I replaced two on my 39 Mercury and I can’t remember exactly BUT I think it was a 6-32 x 5/8 (ish) long round head machine screw with matching nylon lock nut worked perfectly with NO drilling or anything. Once the cap is on you cannot tell If you used a rivet or machine screw!! I used Stainless Steel on mine!!!

I believe that they are soft rivets --- a body dolly and a hammer should do it. If you have a small rivet bucking tool that will work also.

If not, a wire feed welder will also work.

I looked at screws and nuts, screw head towards the brake drum. The screw head hits the brake drum.. I guess you could install the screw and then grind off the screw head? I will get the clips and use rivets. Thanks for the reply.
