1936 Ford Frames - Early vs Late

I am having a difficult time finding out whether the frame under my '36 Ford 2 door sedan is an early or late frame. According to a description I found for the late frame, the portion of the x member that goes from the transmission saddle to the rear of the frame will have three large holes, and a small blister towards the inside of the frame with a small 3/8 hole underneath it forward of the large hole - that is what I have and you'd think it would end there. HOWEVER, according to Chassis Engineering should I order the complete rear end mounting kit I have an Early frame (p 62 of their catalog). How do I find out what I really have?

If your ordering a rear leaf kit from CE the last 18 inches of the frame rail is what you should be looking at. Latter 35 frames have a much beefier frame rail in this area. I used one of their rear leaf kits in a past project.

I have both, but I can't remember which is which. I think what you're describing is an early frame. Richard Lacy from the EFV8 Garage knows for sure, he has a different mount for the master cylinder depending on which frame it is.

If you have a Chassis Engineering catalog, they show pictures that will give you all you need. They show early and late 36 frames so you can select the proper spring arrangement. I have done 2 and the pictures are all you need to decide what you have.

Chassis Engineering has a good pic of the *** end that will show that area of difference. Moving forward on the frame the center section changes with regard to mechanical brakes but not a big deal. Body side mounts will be different for specific years and up front basically it's your radiator mount brackets left and right that differ.

The distance from the back bumper bracket bolt is 13" to where it kicks up. The 1st photo shows the type of frame Chassis Engineering calls an Early frame (p 62 of their catalog). The 2nd photo calls out the description for a Late frame with the 3 holes and blister. I also need to know which pedal kit for a '36 Ford to order from the EFV8 Shop, Early or Late. As it stands now, I order the Early kit for the rear end install from Chassis Engineering and the Late kit for pedals from EFV8 - or am I (as usual) missing something here? I would imagine Henry Ford (who rarely threw anything away) mixed the old frame rails with a new "X" member and called it "good". He must be having a humorous chuckle on me about now.

I measured 16", so 13 from were you measured is the early. So order what else you need as a early.I guess you want the kit for the brakes.
