1936 distributor question

I had a quick question regarding distributors for a 1936. I know there is a late and early. The only info I could dig up was the difference in coils. I can't tell the difference between the 1937-up distributor and late 1936. Can these be adapted to work on a 36 engine, and does it matter early or late with regards to the engine? Thanks.

The hole in the top is a different shape.( the scollop is at the front in one and in the back of the other) I believe there are two sizes of the inner bakelite insulator that the H.T. leads clip into, the rotors are different, there are early and late contact sets.
(I am just a learner) The outer bakelite caps might come in two different sizes as well.
I hope someone chimes in that really does know the differences.

The last 3 months of 36 they used a flat top coil. It don't fit the 33, 34, 35 and early 36 distributor. The early coils used a 3 screw hold down and the flat top used 2 screws with a different hole pattern. G.M.

The inner contact plate is diff. between the early 36 and late 36.// Late 36 and up to 41 are all same plate the outside covers are same from 33-34 to 41. // Points are the same from 36 late to 48. ken ct.
