1935 V8 convirteble sedan engine broken

I have driven around 500 miles with the MMO. And the engine still smokes badly.
The engine is running well so I think the piston rings are stuck or worn out.

Now my question is, can I remove the pistons from the engine while the engine stays in the car .. whitout pulling heads

No. You can leave the engine in the car but you have to remove the oil pan and the heads.Removing the oil pan is a lot of work .I would remove a head first and check for wear in the cyl's.

The L-head V8 is the easiest type of engine to pull the heads. Worst case it that studs might be crusty and make it difficult to remove the heads. There are plans for home made head pullers if that happens but another way is to loosen all the nuts and turn the engine over. As long as the coolant has been drained so there will not be a mess, the compression will loosen the heads up some. Some penetrating fluid applied around the studs will soak down in between the studs and the head stud bores.

All it will cost you is a simple set of gaskets for the top end. Find some soft towels to cover the fenders and your good to go.

Sorry you got "fleeced" but that's one hell of a car and the extra for an engine recon, if you have to will be worth it...look on the bright side you will have a new engine and the opportunity to put some "goodies" on or in it if you wish. Best of luck
