1935 Roadster dash question

Good afternoon, guys. I'm working on the dash of my 35 roadster and some previous owner hogged out the ashtray hole to put a tachometer in. I have the correct ashtray I want to install. Does the hole have the step like a 36 closed car? If so, I will be on the hunt for a closed car junk dash to cut that piece out and weld it in mine. Thank you in advance for your help, Dale.

1935-1936 Ford Roadster/Phaeton Dash showing Ash Tray cut-out.
Hope this helps?

Dale,

I'm under the impression that the ash tray hole was cut out of the dash, so there is no metal forming around the hole - it's just an open hole. I'll search for a Ford instruction letter on installing the ash tray which I think explains this to the dealers. I think KRW sold a hole saw just for this purpose. So, I think that you can measure your ash tray and figure out the correct diameter hole required and fill in the space between the tach hole and what you need.

Do you know what year ashtray you have for sure? 1935 uses a turning type that pivots at top and bottom. 1936 uses a pull out at the top type. They attach to the dash panel differently.

Randy, weren’t both types used in ‘36?

Could be, I've never heard them referred to as anything other than 1935 type and 1936 type, but easily could have been 1935 carry over into 36, etc..
Don Rogers would be the one that might know those details.

Standard models were equipped with only a hole filling piece originally.

These days it seems like you hardly see one without the radio controls taking up that space in the open models. Smokers must have quickly complained about not being able to have a radio and an ash tray at the same time, as sometime in 1936 an accessory addon ashtray option was available and placed below the dash.
