Is there a way to remove the Horn button/ light switch (part #3616) from the rod that runs the length of the steering shaft? If so, how? What should the wire look like at the end of the rod, down by the spider? Thanks in advance!

if you remove the clip(3644), the spider?(3643) comes off and then you can pull the horn/light rod out, along with the wire....the wire should have a contact soldered on the end of it....now if you have the steering column attached to the dash...in the car....you could have trouble getting the rod all the way out....good luck....Mike

On my 35 if you remove the switch on the bottom you have removed all the wires! then its just a mater of removing the rod, may need to unbolt the column rear window ect.

Lift the bail and remove switch, pull the keeper but pay attention the orientation for assembly

fOLLOW THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS. ONCE YOU GET THE HORN/LIGHT SWITCH COMING AWAY FROM THE STEERING WHEEL, IF YOU LOOK BEHIND IT(THE ROD COMING OUT WITH IT) YOU WILL SEE 4 LOCATING TABS. tHIS IS HARD TO DO WITHOUT BENDING THE HORN ROD, BUT IF YOU CAREFULLY STRAIGHTEN THE TABS YOU CAN PULL THE HORN BUTTON OUT. MY PHOTO IS OF AN OLD 1 WITH BROKEN HORN ROD.

at the spider end of the rod is a flat hollow rivet (you see just the flat end. Next is a insulator (about 3/16" thick is showing) and then the metal rod. The body of the rivet fits up into the hollow insulator and the insulator fits inside the metal rod. The electrical wire slides through the hollow rod, insulator and rivet and is then soldered to the end of the rivet. Brattons sells a rebuilding kit for the A #5780, I use it on the 35, it has the insulator, wire and rivet.

That is what I was needing to know! The pics and reference to repair parts helps alot. The bottom end of my rod, where the wire would be soldered to the rivet, is bent over to one side. My insulator and rivet must be broke and that is letting it bend. Thanks again to all that contributed to my delima......:D

Suggestion:

Be very careful when you go to remove this rod that you do not put ANY bend or bow in it. The temptation is to 'sneak; it out by gently bending it. Experience from several people here has been you can't ever get it back straight.

So you most probably will have to remove the bolts from steering drop and let the column down some.

Member flatheadfordfan has a series of pictures and hints on how to do this, you might ask him to send the info to you.

Good Luck
