I'm looking at page 22 of "The Ins and Outs of Early Ford Transmissions" by Mac Van Pelt. In figures 48-55. The 7071 thrust washer should slide on until you get it to where it can be rotated. Then you slide the bushing on until the hole in the shaft lines up with the hole in the bushing which puts the bushing up against the 7071 thrust bearing. Here is where I'm confused. After putting the second gear in place and depress the pin so the key can slide over the depressed pin the book said you should see the key protruding behind the second gear. It can't protrude because the rotated 7071 thrust washer blocks it. the key I have is approx. 1-11/16" long and the hole is approx. 5/8" from one end and 1-1/16" from the other end. I can't figure out how to make it work. Is the key the wrong size?

The washer should be rotated so the key slides through it to hold the washer from turning.
I usually set up the pieces (bushing, key and washer, excluding the spring, pin and 2nd gear) ahead of time to be sure it all fits together nicely.
Good luck, Paul J.
