my 36 truck has the stamped steal bolted to the back lower side of the stake pocket

Jeff, I believe the bracket is riveted to the stake pocket-but Lawson would know for certain. I think there are some photos in the Mack Hils book on early pickups. I bolted mine using carriage bolts to the stake pocket but I think rivets are correct. If you have a rear bumper, it obscures the license plate-I moved the plate '36 California plate to a bracket/frame I welded up and attached to one of the bumper bolts, and just kept the month/year tags under the taillight

Mine had D-nuts in the stake pocket.

The one on my pickup is original, except for the welds to secure it and the bolts; If you see a picture of Lawson's I would put a Nickle on it there the same, Is it cheating if I have see it already?

Jeff, I thought there was a picture in Mack Hils book but I was wrong; I know I've seen it somewhere but I can't recall where.In any event, I'm sure Steel35 is right about the bracket. Here is a pic of how I mounted my license plate
