1934 Tudor electrical problem

All of a sudden my stock '34 won't start. It usually starts right up. It appears that I have no spark at the plugs but I have 2.8 volts at the coil with the resistor and 5.5 volts when I bypass the resistor. One by one I have changed the coil, condenser, distributor, cutout, by passed the resistor and replaced the ignition switch. The only real clue is when I hit the starter the ampmeter swings rapidly from 20+ to 20-.
What would cause this?
Grateful for all suggestions.

Why was the ammeter at plus 20 before the engine was running or do you mean it swings back and forth between 20+ and 20-?

How far into the ign circuit do you have power? Slide a piece of paper or cardboard between the points. Power at the points? Can you get them to arc when manually opening and closing them? Does the coil create a spark when you do that? Rotors can and have shorted to the dis. shaft and contacts have burned out of caps also. Make sure the primary ign circuit is working correctly first and then move on to the secondary.

check the motor ground, dirty points? (remember the ignition fires when the points open so points never make contact they will not fire) LOL
