does anybody here no how or where to get a workshop manual that explains how to remove the steering box and rebuild it?? I do have the rebuild kit from early ford but need instructions on how to get it all apart and rebuild it

buy the way its left hand drive and im in Australia.. I don't mind buying a shop manual but unsure which one to buy as I need a full break down and description on this.

Take the steering wheel off, unhook the mast at the dash and top of steering gear. Remove all mounting bolts and pitman arm. With car jacked up high and on stands under the frame, pull gear towards engine and rotate till it comes out the bottom. You may have to raise engine slightly. It has been a while since I have done this but believe this isw what I did.

Forgot, remove light switch and horn tube horseshoe. If you want the horn button and tube out, remove the rear glass.

To rebuild the box itself, VanPelt has some information, there are several articles online about steering box rebuilds and the is the Vern Tardel booklet "Ford Steering" "Service, Repair & Modification". I would rate the Tardel book as only fair, it leaves a lot out, but it is somewhat helpful.

thanks for the info,, but im very much in the dark with out a instructions diagram etc ,, ive never even had the steering wheel of and as for the light switch even though not connected as mine has a light switch on the dash now I need to no how it all comes apart..
im guessing that you disconnect and undo the light and horn switch from the bottom of the steering box??
then obviously disconnect the pitman arm, undo the bolt clamp holding the Colum to the box.
im taking it you must remove the steering wheel but does the horn button pop out how is it retained??
then take the s/wheel of.
remove floor and drop colum from its you mount??
then im presuming the steering lock etc.
will this then allow me enough room to slide the rods in the colum back up enough to rotate the steering box free of chassis and colum??

Light switch is held on with a wire bale. Horn button/light switch is a attached to a rod that runs the length of the column, at the bottom look for a two pronged end held on by a horsue clip and spring against it. You have to push the end up to get the clip out. Yes, remove all the floor stuff and disconnect the column drop.

thanks for the information ill be attempting it tonight,, im a newbee to all the hot rod stuff spent my time on 70's Australian muscle cars

ok ive just attempted and removed the the bottom plate cup looking thingy buy the 2 7/16 retaining bolts, acsessed the horseshow clip and removed the light button clips that attaché it all to the rod it all slipped of perfectly I took pics so I no how it all goes back together.
hopefully I can slide the center rod up far enough slip the out rod down enough or exit completely so I can remove the steering box to rebuild it.
is this correct shall that work??

That will work or if you want to pull the rear window, you can pull the horn/light switch rod all the way out.

The box really should be pulled up into the cab. You can't get the horn rod out in the cab and you need to get to the nut holding the wheel and then use a puller to get the wheel off. Pull the floorboard panels and disconnect the pedal likage as required and pull the whole thing out so you can take it apart without ruining anything.

yes I pulled up the floor took the pedals of left the pedal arms there, then I just pulled it out turning it left n right to clear it all, buy the way with the engine jacked up on the left side I could lean the steering colum over and slide the horn rod out the drivers door..
now to take of the ignition switch and work out how to separate the colum from the steering box
