1934 Model BB brake spring length

Ordered new shoe return springs for my '34 truck but they are about 3/8" too long. I could only find the 5-7/8" size listed anywhere online. Drawing below is not that precise but measurements off the spring are relatively accurate.

My operating shaft has nearly worn through the center of the spring and I'll have none left if I try to drop a spot or two of weld on it. I suppose I could always drill another set of holes in the shoes and use the longer springs.

Any idea of where to get a couple of these springs? Or if there is a suitable replcement off another model?

32 BB?, you might want to check with Model A suppliers instead of the flathead parts suppliers. Likely there was some holdover on the changes from the AA to the BB. That is the best guesse I have. Rod

Hi Rowdy,
I tried Vic over here at PV and he only had the same sizes as Mac's. I'm sure I'll come up with something as I need to get the grass clippings out of the dump. They are starting to smell a little. I wouldn't even be surprised if the old spring goes back in as is. What the heck, it probably took 50 years to get that way, it should make the winter. Worst case the shoes lock up and I get my picture in the local paper.

As I keep searching and per Rowdy's suggestion, I found these on Snyder's site. Proportionally the longer ones look about right. Although for a '28-'31 Model AA, it would explain the extra "piece" of a broken spring that looks like the short ones in the photo. The piece was floating around in the drum but only had one hook left on it. So looking at a picture of the brakes in an early pickup, which shows upper and lower springs, it would appear that many of the braking systems back then were similar and used similar part numbers prefixed by "A", "AA", "B", "BB", to designate the application. Certainly the picture looks very similar to the brakes on mine.

If that is the case, does anyone know if p/n AA-2035 and AA-2036 are the same as p/n BB-2035 and BB-2036?

Maybe someone at Snyders can measure the springs if they are on the shelf.

Since it looks like that might be it. Perhaps ask on the Model A forum. There is bound to be atleast one perspn that has some old AA brake return springs laying around. If I were home I would be of better help. Also there is a AA website that is all AA stuff, but I do not have that website her in front of me. Rod

Thanks Rowdy. I just took a leap of faith and ordered a set. What the heck. They look right so might as well. I'll post back in a few days when I get them.

I'm actually a bit surprised there is not more out there on the big trucks. Maybe they are not as popular or maybe not as many survived. Certainly they are too slow for today's roads and that may have limited their desirability back when they needed to be saved.

A-2035 renumbered B-2035 1928-34 pass & comm'l 5 7/8"
AA-2035, renumbered BB-2035 1928-34 truck 4 1/4"

A-2036 1928-31 2 1/2" pass & comm'l
B-2036 1932-34 3 1/2" pass & comm'l
BB-2036 1928-34 5 1/2" truck

From various Ford parts books

I will check my stuff tomorrow, not sure without checking if I have any or not.

Good info, thanks! I ended up using the old worn springs because I couldn't find any at the time.

The new set of AA brake springs AA2035/2036 fit just fine in my '34 BB as barnstuf's 'bibles' had indicated they should.

Both front sides wheel bearings and brake shoes were scripted. It amazes me that so many parts on the truck wear the Ford script and or have the part numbers stamped in.

Rears are next. Thanks everyone who responded for the advice.

I'm looking for a set of the "B-2036 1932-34 3 1/2" pass & comm'l" springs noted above. I have a 1930 model A, but it has 1932-1934 brakes on it with the 12" spoked drums. Does anyone know of a supplier?
