1934 Ford Sedan Exhaust query

Hi Guys.

Ive not been here in a while. Was just about to get an exhaust sorted for the 34 sedan. Now im guessing as i dont know. I assume it would have been an 1 1/2" diameter pipe system. But was wondering about the path it took? Plus if i was to up the power a bit in the engine whether it would need to be enlarged to work better. Any thoughts would be good. Pictures or places to purchase the parts would be good. Did they sell them in stainless also? As i am looking to use it loads. The roads and weather here in England isnt kind to any steel part at all.

Bit long winded but i think i got it asked.

Thanks Roland

welcome back to the 'Barn....got pics??...lol....hopefully someone will be able to help you with you questions??....Mike

This is a spot asked about a bit . The 2 piece tailpipe joins under this clamp and exits UNDER the rear of the crossmember . I put the front pipes on first , then the muffler , then the front tailpipe and last the rear tailpipe .

Hi Roland, You are in England, so is your 1934 Ford car a right hand drive and V8 or a 4 cylinder ? Right hand drive V8s have the exhaust system routed down the left hand side of the chassis whereas on Left hand drive cars the exhaust is routed down the right side of the chassis on a V8 and 4cyl 1934 Fords. USA made exhaust systems will not fit a RHD V8 car. Even the muffler has the rear outlet in a different position. Most of the V8 engine exhaust pipes are 1 1/2" OD. except for the section that enters the front end of the muffler (welded in originally) which is 2"" OD. All the original Ford support brackets and clamps are Ford special components for that model. Let us know more details of your car. Regards, Kevin.

David,

With respect, the clamp joining the two tail pipes at the rear cross member in your photo appears to be a '35 and up clamp and not the 40-5256 clamp used in '33-'34 (which is the same for both LHD and RHD applications). The 48-prefix clamp is made up of two pieces spot welded together whereas the 40-prefix clamp is formed from a single length of rolled steel strapping.

Now, that's really picking nits, I am sure the vehicle in the illustration will not be up for point judging on the Concourse. LOL But you're correct of course.

Lawson ,
That 34 parts car [ well what's left of it ] was last tagged in 1946 . Leave it to DavidG to find it's fault !!! LOL .

David , Sorry for not looking closer but I was not expecting changed parts on it .

Looks like this one will work left or right also .

Checked my spare 33 frame and it is missing so no pic from here .

NOT crawling under a car as it is COLD here .

Has a v8 in it. Hope this is acceptable. I only came in from the garage to take the dog for a walk. But its chucking it down with rain now. So i will sit on here for a bit.

Thanks for the info so far.

I think im going to end up making one in the end. but its good to know the dimensions for sure.

Thanks Gents. Its good to be back building something.

Lawson,

The question poser normally is not the only person looking at a thread. I agree that in this case the point is gilding on the lily, but who knows who else will look and conclude that's the clamp they should be looking for in a restoration?

David,

Excessive powers of observation are something of a curse; sorry. I am not loved as a V8 Club Deputy Judge except perhaps for the small minority who really want their car to be judged thoroughly and accurately so that they can improve it for the next time around.

No problem and as you know I am a detail freak also .

When I find one in the mess or get under a car I will post a pic of the right one .

Very first day of the year and I have already been called to the principals office and scolded !!!!! LOL LOL .

As I understand it This site is for pretty much original cars so the detail of original is always of interest ,whether the poster uses it will be up to them ,Happy New Year ,Ted

Ihave a pic some where of how the pipe gets through the rear cross member on a stock 33/34,let me know if you need it and I will look it out .

Roland as your car looks like it's been rodded chopped and radius rods by the look does it matter too much where you run your exhaust I'm sure any UK exhaust shop could bend one up for you even where you are a mild steel one should give you 10 years I have twin pipes happy to PM you via email photos of my system

Hi Roland, Well here I am thinking that you had a fairly original 1934 Ford sedan, but you have a chopped HOT ROD so my previous information on exhausts is not really applicable to a modified car. We are not so much about hot rods on the Barn so maybe the HAMB would be a better forum for you to find information. Good luck with your car. Regards, Kevin.

Ted. You are correct. Its stock info im after. Happy new year to you also.

Lawrie. Thanks for that.

Trevo. That sounds great It would be handy if you would.

Koates. I would prefer it unchopped also. I Understand what you are saying. I am on the Hamb. But felt it would better to get stock info. So i can make it as close to stock looking from underneath. Im not really going for a street rod look. More a tradition type of build.

Roland pm me your email address I am just finishing a tidy up of the undercarriage easy for me to get a couple of pics to you at the moment cheers
