1934 Ford Exhaust Problem

I recently replaced my '34 stock flathead with a stock '36 flathead. With the engine now in place I cannot get the exhaust pipe to mate up with the exhaust manifold. It seems that no matter which way I turn or twist it I cannot get it to fit on the manifold and through the hole in the frame. The oil pan where the starter fits is in the way. I removed the starter and the steady rod but no help there. What am I missing??

If you are using the exhaust manifolds off the 34 engine, it should fit. If you are referring to the header pipe that goes back to the muffler, you may have a problem. I always leave the header pipe and crossover pipe in place when I remove a 34 or 32 engine.

Thanks for your reply.
I am using the exhaust manifolds off the '34 engine. It seems inconceivable that back in time when the exhaust system had to be replaced, it would be required to pull out the engine.

I'm not sure if I am reading your above post correctly.... it sounds like you replaced your 34 engine with a 36 engine, and then tried to install the exhaust pipe that goes from the exhaust manifold to the muffler by going in through the engine compartment.
If you don't initially get this pipe in place, when there is no engine installed, the only way I know to install that pipe is to raise the front of the car, and place jack stands under front of frame. This will allow the front suspension to hang down enough to install that pipe from beneath the front end of the car. Hopefully, you can understand my explanation.

On a left hand drive 34 the pipe doesn't go on the starter side but a right hand one does ,The main pipe from the manifold to the muffler goes under the first X member on a 34 not through it like a 1935 its has a dog leg bend to clear the wish bone ,Ted

Did you reuse the '34's front motor mount brackets on the '36 block? The '36 brackets are different....

With respect, on a LHD V8, the muffler inlet pipe is on the right or passenger side and on a RHD V8 the muffler inlet pipe is on the left side or passenger side, which means that on a LHD drive vehicle it is on the same side as the starter motor.

correct- 36 mounts are wider for a start so won't work in a 34

Your right David , I should have said

Ted,

I wholeheartedly agree regarding the routing of the inlet pipe, especially given that the inlet pipe and muffler were originally one piece and there is no possible way to thread either end through the X member.

To all,
Thanks for your help. My mistake was thinking that the exhaust went through a hole in the X frame. I now know that it goes BELOW the X frame. I should have taken a picture of the routing before I removed it. And yes, I used the front mounts from the 34 engine on the 36 engine.
This is a great forum!
