1934 Ford brakes

I just realized today that my back brakes on my 34 3 window coupe are hydraulic . My front brakes are manual. I want to change them back to manual. Will the front and back interchange? Or are the back manual brakes different? Where might I find pictures? Any opinions would be appreciated.
 
Combining hydraulic and mechanical brakes on the same car seems highly complicated and extremely unusual. Posting pictures might help clear up a few questions about what is really on your car.

The illustration below shows the complete original mechanical brake system. You will note that the backing plates are different from those for the front brakes, but the internal parts such as the shoes, return springs, are nearly all the same as those for the front brakes.

I am posting some pictures that dads34ford sent me. He is working with an android phone. That may be part of his posting problem, anyone know? The car had belonged to his father and just looking at the brake parts doesn't tell the whole story, he is really a lot further along than it looks. Anyone know of a complete mechanical brake system being removed from a restored car?

I might have a set of mechanicals off a 34 pickup. (For sure I have fronts) just backing plates and drums. Shipping could be a bit, but they are yours free if you want them.
 
I have tried to research to see if the 34 rear truck complete rear brakes are the same as a 34 3 window coupl. I am still not sure. Do you have any pictures of yours
 
If it is a '32-'34 pickup truck or other 'commercial' vehicle, rather than a 'big' truck with a 131 1/2" or 157" wheelbase, both the rear brake drums, backing plates, and internal parts are the same as those on a passenger car. (The front brake assemblies are also the same as those on passenger car chassis.)
 
A bit of trivia. The driveshaft was a different length for the 4 cylinder versus the 8 cylinder vehicles in 1933/34. The rear end you are talking about in post #9 would have the same brakes but the complete rear end might not be a bolt-in (the truck was probably a 4 cylinder).

As this is a collection of parts rather than a running car, it might be that there was an intention to convert to hydraulics and parts were being gathered but the conversion was never completed.

Rear hydraulics and mechanical fronts would be a difficult thing to set up (as I think was mentioned earlier in the thread).

The presence of the remnants of the rear mechanical linkages and rods is probably more significant than the actual brake assemblies.

If you do decide to convert to hydraulic, I can tell you that a 39 pedal assembly is a bad way to convert a 33/34. The methods used by the Early V8 garage are a much more satisfactory way to do it.

I'm doing a lot of guessing in my estimation of the situation, if I'm wrong, forgive me.

What is most important is to take stock of what you have. It may be that you are missing a lot of parts, I don't know.

J, my frame was seriously weakened after the 39 pedals were fitted, hence the suggestion that they are not the recommended way to go. It might be possible to make a viable fitment of them on a bare frame with good access all around and good fabrication skills, but (as in my case) on a car that has never had the body removed, it is not the easy bolt in that one might expect.

Yep, Mart, as I said, Major Surgery! If someone wants to do it I have a lot of information collected up on how, but I decided to go with the stock 33 pedals on mine with a bell-crank setup. If someone wants a bolt in, go with the one from Early V8.

I feel the same as your comments in post 13 Mart. I think the intention was to convert this car into a stock car. My dad rescued it in 1960 from a couple young kid's. Most the parts were their except for the motor and transmission. I think the rear hydraulic which I think are a 39 Or 40 had not been on the car very long at that point .the peddles and what linkage their is appears to be stock. You bought it 100.00
