1934 21 stud vs 1935 21 stud engine

Is there any advantage 0f a 1935 engine block over a 1934 engine block? I guess I am asking what changes were made in 1935 or which one will give me the best service in stock form. My 34 came with a running original engine but I also have a bare 35 block. Just wondering where I should put my money between the two blocks when it is time for a rebuild. Thanks in advance for any comments or advice you can give me.

Seems like there should be several responses from the experts.... (I'm not the expert.) 34 and 35 are both babbit-main engines. I see no advantage/disadvantage there. 35 has the breather at the RF of the pan/block - maybe that is an advantage??? Other opinions??? If it were me, I would prefer to put my money on a 36LB block, or a 37 block, or ??? But, that is not your question, and JMO.

I have a 33 and 34,the 33 has the original babbit eng in ,its as smooth as and has no problem running at 60 all day in 40deg C temps.
I also have a 36 eng for a spare and it has a late model mercury cam made to fit.I would use either engine. but have a soft spot for the orig 33 babbit eng,
It has full flow oil setup.

First, a 1934 Ford is always going to be more desirable with a 1934 engine ... from the standpoint of originality. Further, there is nothing about a 1935 engine that would make it worth more than the original engine. As Bob said, the vent's about it.

Are you sure the bare block is a 1935? Is it in fact a babbitt engine? Excuse the question, but do not know how familiar you are with 35/36 engine production.

Be sure to plug the vent on the '35 pan, if using the 33-34 block. It will leak if you don't.
(Just did mine last week)

A couple things to consider - 35 has cam bearings , 34 does not . Also if using a vented type block with a non-vented pan DO NOT use the pipe that slips in under the fuel pump stand . 38coupe did a thread on block ID that shows this stuff .

Cam bearings. Missed that. (My defense is that I have '35s and probably will never own a '34 ... or a '33 ... or a '32.)

Hello Hoop, Thanks for the information. I know that the "35 block" does not use inserts. Not sure about the vent pipe. I am not home now so I can't check it for a few days. The spare block came with the car and the guy I got everything from, 30 years ago, said that it came out of a 35 and and he got it for parts and to have a spare block. After he had all of this for 25 years and never did anything with it he sold it to me. Dennis

David J, Thanks for the information. Cam bearings in the 35 and not in the 34 to me would make the 35 the better engine. I would think that it will be hard for me to keep the valves adjusted in the 34 engine with out cam bearings as the engine wears. Perhaps this is not a high wear area and not a major problem? What would an engine rebuilder do with a 34 engine that has too much wear here? Is it possible to put cam bearings in a 34 block. Dennis

blocks can be line bored for insert cam bearings and would be good to do as just a little ware in the center cam bearing and you will louse a lot of oil pressure.

A lot of 33-34 have been lined bored for cam bearings, the center cam journal has a habbit of wearing the block and loosing oil pressure. Walt
