1933 Steering Box Mount??

OK....my truck in a box project is coming along pretty well...except the steering box. Can anyone tell me if there is supposed to be a plate or something between the box and the frame where the three bolts go through to mount it???? It just doesn't seem to look right to me??

At some point either at or not long before job #1, 1934 models, a separate triangular plate with only round holes for the sector housing attachment was released for the outside of the chassis frame to eliminate the possibility of the slotted hex nuts hanging up in the slotted holes in the frame itself. Longer drilled-shank bolts were released at the same time.

By "truck" I am assuming that you mean pickup truck with a 112" wheelbase, correct?

What are you mounting for a steering box, an original 33 box? No, it bolts to the frame rail.

This is a 33 car and it does not have the triangular plate .

David, is that a recent photo? it looks like you are putting some life back in the motor?

Pics are from 2011 waking him up from his nap that started in the 50's . Steering box had just been freshened and was filled with SAE 140 . Still in there . I do plan to fix the antifreeze leak this spring so you can ride in him .

If you look closely at the steering box on my 34 you can see the triangular plate bolted against the frame.

Steve, the glare of that perfect, shiny paint makes it impossible for me, and many others I'm sure, to focus in on such a small portion of your car's exceptional chassis. 'Not fair to all us amateurs! Ron

i did notice on the 34 i'm working on that the washers and the frame in that area were all gouged up from being squeezed into the slots. that plate is probably a good idea, easy to make

Hi all; I was told that the slots were for the different angles of columns between the PU and the cars. Also different dash mount locations. I also was told that some triangular steering box adapters are 'clocked' for this difference? Comments welcome. Newc

i dont know what adapters you are thinking of, but the steering box itself is the same 32-34, but the sector housing that bolts to the frame has a few variations to change from car to pickup cab, and year differences in frame rails. its not much, and if you are looking at a steering gear at a swap meet you better know what the diffs are if the seller doesnt

Yes and the 32 has a longer sector housing also correct???
I'm glad this question about the 3 hole plate has been asked. I bought a complete front end "34" at a swap meet and the box had the original bolts and one of these plates. I thought someone just made it to cover the slot holes of frame but now to know it came out from the
Factory makes me feel better that I used it to cover my slotted holes on my 32 frame. I slotted the holes to locate my coloum in the right place. I figured someone at a show would call me out on it but now I will have a real answer for them. That's guys

Sorry guys been busy since I asked about this!!! Thanks for all the help and information ! !
Yes I am mounting a 33 box to a 33 pickup truck frame. It just didn't look right to me but I was thinking that between the frame and box there should have been another plate, only be a use there is a cork gasket exposed that I now have to assume goes directly against the frame side??? Step in and correct me if I am thinking incorrectly here.

Also I do not have the outer plate for the outside of the frame. Should this plate have tabs or anything to locate it to the slots or is a flat plate okay???

If I haven't told you guys this...... this project was started by someone else that my parents were having build the truck for them. It went south VERY QUICKLY so I am pi king up all the pieces and moving forward now really well actually!!!! This truck has been in the family since 1959 when my grandfather got it. It was originally made into a street rod about 1957 or 58 and has been stored inside all of its life!!!!!!! A better startin point a man could not have asked for!!!!!!!!! Will try to post pics of the truck soon!!!!!!

The gasket at the outer end of the sector housing butts up against the inside of the frame rail, as you assume.

The triangular plate referred to above was flat and if you're after authenticity, it is highly likely that your truck did not have such a plate.
