1933-34 Muffler source

Where can I purchase a new original size, original looking and original sounding muffler for my 1934 coupe? The Ford P/N is 40-5230.

Please don't suggest Mac's. They want $333.00!!!!!!!!! plus freight
I have been unable to find any other supplier-for any price.

I had heard that someone made stainless steel exhaust systems. Has anyone had any experience with them? Who are they? Do they fit and sound original?

Smitty's mufflers have been suggested but they are the wrong size and I wonder what they sound like.

Call Roy Nacewicz his mufflers are an exact reproduction the domed ends are Ford script with the correct inlet and outlet pipe size.

Roy's price is $360.00 just for the muffler. I will contact Waldron. On their website they list complete exhaust systems for $325.00. However they don't list individual components. I am looking for just a muffler for my daily driver. Do I have to pay over $300.00? My car is not a concourse show car.

Daryl, Try Joe's Antique Auto, in Uxbridge, Ma. ...they have a '32 - '34 muffler in their 2013 catalog, for $50 .....(18-5230) 1-800-508-3980

Don't anything about this muffler but I do know about Joe's. Great guy, great service, fair prices and shipping.

If your car is not going to be show/concourse as you say, go to your local muffler shop, if they have any experience they will be able to hook you up with something close to original, just not for judging purposes.

This is very good advice. Mufflers can be supplied by size as well as inlet & outlet orientation.
Show quality? Those are the mufflers supplied by Roy Nacewicz.
The original poster, Daryl, states he'd like original size, appearance, sound, etc. But, then goes on to inquire about stainless, etc. Mixed messages for certain. So, Daryl, what exactly do you want? Authentic or not?
If memory serves (Dave R., where are ya?) the entire exhaust system was authentically one piece in 33 - 34. So, for show, even with a high quality reproduction muffler, you'd have some welding to do.

My car is not a show car. It will not be judged. That being said, I am trying to keep it reasonably as original as I can. Paying $300.00 plus for a muffler is not going to happen.---I have called Joe's Antique Auto. He no longer has mufflers.---I mentioned stainless only because it might be a cheaper alternative. I would use a stainless if it will fit, sound and look "almost" original.--Still working on contacting Waldron. Thank you all for your suggestions.

Mike,

You're right, the muffler inlet pipe and muffler were originally one piece from back in Model A days through the '34 models. But then, the intended purpose herein is function, not appearance or originality in the strictest sense.

The problems that I've had with cheaper reproduction exhaust systems is the flange to exhaust connections have been too large and the crossover exhaust pipe didn't mate with the main exhaust system. In addition the rear main exhaust pipe bends were incorrectly bent to pass through and over the frame then out the back of the car. They can be modify to fit but bear in mind it will take a little work to modify. Also Roy Nacewicz sells an exact reproduction top quality muffler it fits like a glove and on my past cars I found the non authentic mufflers were slightly wider and would just touch the frame and often rattling against the frame which drove me nuts.

I bought a complete set from Waldron, took me a couple hours to install, had to cut a small bit of pipe from the crossover pipe, very pleased with it. I would order from them again.

Part of the appeal of a flathead is the Exhausted note, I don't think you will get much from a original Muffler ,I use a Primitive gate valve for when my Wife's in the car. This feeds it around the muffler .When driving through tunnels etc its open so you get a real good bark .Because of the spare battery box hole on the left of Canadian cars its a easy instal Ted
