I like mine. It's a gemmer with needle bearings and modern seal. Steers good to me anyway....and I guess my girlfriend and her grandma likes the way it steers. Angela's 32 pickup will get stock steering as well....she says if it steers as good as my roadster, she's happy!
The boxes are all Gemmer design...I think the majority were built by G, but some were built by Ford. Ford generally had backup supply plans for parts from the outside...
Ford ones will show copper plating on gears, part of the tempering process. Boxes have an F cast in...in the case above, one box carries the Gemmer numbers, other the Ford numbers.
I just went through this about a month ago trying to figure whick box I had. No Ford part numbers. Finally found the number 40 stamped on top of the box. Which at face value would make it 33-34. It was a shortenen column with a 32 column drop on it so I am still not fully convinced it is 33-34, but have it for sale advertized as 33-34, still could be a 32 with the 40 meaning something else. Orientation of the frame mounting holes would be the quick way to distinguish the thing's original home.
The 40 mark was used to distinguish between 13 and 15 ratio gears, since the change was made during 1933 production
Thanks, either I overlooked that detail when mentioned during the original discussion or it wasn't mentioned specificly. That clears up my doubting and wondering. Thinking the column was from a 33-34 pickup and shortened. That would likely explain the mixed parts unless I misunderstand the use of the 32 column drop still being used on the 33-34 trucks and pickups. I am I correct on that? Thanks Rod
