1932 Ford 3W Rumble Seat spring mounting??

All-

I'm getting ready to mount some rumble seat springs to my '32 3W. I already have the back spring top bracket installed. Anyone have details (pics) of the lower back spring mounting brackets. There are two 12-24 clinch nuts along lower lid edge (installed in the two metal reliefs) that they should attach to (I think), but I don't know what they physically look like. I am guessing some strapping that wraps around a spring wire/frame and bolts to the clinch nut. A pic would be great!

Also, how does the bottom seat spring attach to the floor? The front edge sits on the riser panel (not sure what holds it there), but what holds the rear side of the springs. I see the 33/34 has a special Rumble Seat bottom spring retainer (40-41000-B). Is there something similar for the 32 3W (can this 33/34 retainer be modified and used)? Or is the seat wedge up against the tall Lid stop brackets? What about the rectangular hole near the gas sender hole? I have included some pics for reference...

I will attach some photos showing how the bottom rumble seat spring is held to the floor and to the front edge of the seat riser. The lower back side of the seat spring has a long narrow loop that slides into that rectangular hole that you mentioned. The front edge of the seat spring has two spring steel pieces that go up against the seat riser. With the lower back tail like loop and these two front pieces the seat spring assembly is wedged in place. These extra pieces are incorporated in the make-up of the original spring from the factory. I hope you are able to understand what I am trying to make clear. I took these pictures when I had my Deuce coupe apart. Regards, JimOH

PS: The trunk models had a small plate screwed over the rectangular hole.

Jim,

This is really good and very helpful. Thanks, I understand exactly how the bottom spring should be mounted. Do you know what keeps water and such out of the rear rectangular hole? Or does it pretty much stay open to the bottom of the seat springs?? I am guessing that the two small screws holes on either side of the rectangular hole is for attaching a cover plate when seat isn't installed (or set up as a trunk).

How about the bottom of the back rest spring. Do you have any picture of how the spring mounts to the lower lip of the lid?

Thanks again..... Kip

Kip,
I restored my Deuce coupe in '88-89 so I could be a little hazy here but I believe the bottom edge of the rumble lid had a "D" nut about 8" in from each side with a slotted flat head screw to attach a sheet metal bracket that was on the bottom of the back spring assembly. I will try to attach a photo that shows this nut on the bottom edge. I will scan this photo later and if we don't hear from Dave Reho I will attach it later.

Kip, I reread your first part and you pretty well had the back spring attachments correct. JimOH

Hi Jim, I know about the D nuts on the lid edge. They are circled in the one photos. They are 12-24 thread and sit in the sheetmetal relief along the edge about 8" from either side; Just as you said. What I don't know is what the sheet metal piece looks like that would attached to the d nut to the spring and/or seat frame. It could even be a loop on the Springs? Or as simple as a piece of sheet metal wrapping the spring and bolted to this d nut. Thanks.

Probably not the same as 32 but this is the way it was done 33-34 .

Kip,

The photos that David J provided apply to your seat back spring. While the seat bottom cushion mounting is unique to the '32 deluxe coupe, the method of mounting the seat back cushion carried over to '33-'34 rumble seat equipped cars.

You did not mention the two brackets further up on the inside of the rumble lid that catch and retain the top of the seat back spring; do you have them? They also are the same as was used on '33-'34 rumble lids.

Dave

Late 34 upper brackets are different but that doesn't apply here .

Yes, I am squared away on the upper brackets (see photo). It was just the lower brackets that I wasn't sure about. So if I follow the postings, the 32 3W lower bracket (and upper for that matter) were the same as on the 33/34. This is a good thing since I already have two lower 33/34 brackets laying around and just need to attached them to the rumble seat spring frame. Thanks, all of this was very helpful.

Please excuse my nosiness, but judging from one of your first photos, it looks like you are not planning to use the stock package tray as the forward lip of the drip tray would normally attach to the back of the large horizontal package tray base.

If you remain curious about those two pairs of holes on either side of the rear of your floor pan, they weren't used in the deluxe coupe. The rear two-thirds of your coupe's floor pan was common with that used in a Victoria and convertible sedan and when used in those body types, the lower half of the hinge on the rear seat back was riveted in those locations. (The seat back partially folded down to permit the storage of a small amount of luggage, etc. behind the rear seat.)

Kip, I think you've got everything you need there now. A BIG THANK YOU from me to Jim, Dave and Dave for helping solve this mystery and for the great photos. One more thing, as I may have mentioned earlier, I'm skeptical that your bottom repop spring will have the rear loop. (you may want to check that out before your stitcher buttons things up, incase you have to make your own). I think you'll be OK on the front as I think (without looking) that my repop Deuce roadster spring steel pieces on the front are just like the original in Jim's photo. I'm doubtful that Henry bothered with a way to keep water out of he rect. hole when it was in use as a rumble option. Maybe one of he boys knows better? Chuck

Hi David, Good to know about those mysterious holes. I was wondering about them since the rectangular hole is for the rumble seat.

Actually, the two pictures I posted were not of my 3W. I just used them as reference for my questions. I believe the credit for these photos go to Deuce Roadster. BTW, I will be using a package tray and will have a factory set up with the rear window drain pan.
