QUESTION PLEASE . can i take my 2 tooth sterring box out with out taking the entire column out ? i have read the book , but not sure . thank you .. steve

I don't think so. There is a gear on the shaft inside of the box, and since you have to take the steering wheel nut off you might as take it all out. If nothing else it makes life easier on you.

...If you meant to say "steering sector", then you might be able to remove the steering box cover plate and the pitman arm and slip the sector out of the box. However, I have not checked to see if there is enough room. Even if it is possible, you will have a difficult time adjusting it after you replace it. Adjustment is easier on the work bench.

Yes, it is possible to remove and replace the sector with the column in the car. The column must be unbolted and "floating", though, and it's not an easy job. I've done a sector&housing swap and subsequent adjustment in the car, but I won't again--I'll go ahead and remove the column as Don suggests.

The steering shaft & worm have to come out the bottom, which means the steering wheel has to come off first, after which there's nothing to be gained by separating the column from the box in the car. Take the whole thing out and work on it on the bench.

The whole column will need to come out. You can take it out through the interior of the car if you want. You need to remove the pitman arm, starter, clutch and brake pedals, battery, and steering wheel and then it will come right out. Be sure to protect the seat with something to prevent getting 80 years worth of grease on it!
