1931 Running Board project UPDATE again

Hi Everyone,
For those of you who have asked about the 1931 Running Boards from Rootlieb I have some encouraging news. As I reported last time Tom has said he would make a run of 500 sets of boards. He said he did not want to use the list names that we compiled. He said he would make that run in about a year so I want to report in speaking with him the year is almost up and he has said he would make the production run in about another month.

That means he will make the run and then advertise that the boards are available for sale. The purchase price per set is $560.00 so if you want a set they will once again be available in the near future. I hope everyone is happy with this news and I know these are very expensive but they are the best.
We were able to get a new rubber guy and I am confident the rubber will be better than ever. I am told the last run of 40 looked excellent.
I will confirm this with Tom when I see him at Hershey and I am sorry this has taken so long to get done but I have done my best. I hope we all get the boards we need, Thanks for your patience, Ken:)

Hi Don,
I am trying to get to the bus........but an air compressor for the museum got in the way(and many other things) but I have new rear springs and I am ready to take the wheels to the sand blaster (need to buy tires$$$$$$$$$$) so this winter I am trying to get back on it. There are only two Ehrenhofers and we (my brother Ron) work together on these projects.

Ron,

Great! Thanks for the updates.... I called an got on the list some time back... hope to put them on the 68C whenever I get to it.... Sorry I wasn't able to make your swap a few weeks back... I will have it on my must do list for next year. See you in Hershey!

I'd pay him in full now if he would let me! Hope I don't miss them.

I am a bit embarrassed, but I am unfamiliar with the high-quality running boards discussed here. Could someone please enlighten me with the differences between these running boards and those available for about half the price from Bratton's, Snyder's, and others. I am not familiar with running board quality options, and that's why I'm asking. Also, will these running boards fit the 1931 Slant Window Town Sedan, Model 160B? Thank you.

Hi Pat,
Yes these are a very special board. Not for your typical driver but for the restorer who is looking for the best reproduction. In 1931 only the rubber was extruded out over the steel and vulcanized (heated up and pressured into a mold and the rubber was pushed thru little hpoles in the board and little dimples formed on the bottom. The edges were molded into a shape with a little hump of rubber all the way around to provide anti squeak between the fender and the board. obviously, they are not easy to reproduce and therefore are more expensive to do it correctly, they have been out of production for several years now and some of us are hoping we can get them made up very soon. I hope this helps, Ken

Ken,

Thank you for the informative reply. While the boards that came with my car look relatively new and nice, they are not of the same quality that you've described. The rubber on my boards do not continue over the edges and onto the sides where the boards attach to the fenders to minimize body squeak. I have a related question, for those of us who do not have the "correct" running boards that you've spoken about. Is there supposed to be any kind of edge rubber used that fits on the inside edge, and front and rear edges of the 1931 running board. I have seen this product on the Bert's Model A website, part number A-16458 "Running Board Edge Rubber Pair", and was wondering if this product should be used with my boards, but is not required with the "correct" boards that you've described? Thanks.
