1931 model a Roadster vin #

I recently purchased a 31 ford Roadster. I found the chassis bin # but can't read a vin # on the banger. The spot where the # should be is blank. What does this mean?

I have a '31 Roadster as well. It has a Diamond B block with casting date in 1936. It is bare in the usual place that numbers are found. I did find a BB number on the flywheel housing and the CA DMV accepted that as the VIN#. I've been told that the AA & BB engines were not stamped (maybe yes maybe no). I've also read somewhere that replacement bare blocks were delivered to dealers without numbers. The hunt continues.

First are you sure you have a Model A engine? The Model B engine (has provision for fuel pump on passenger side and no external oil line) did not have a number although the boss was still there. Beginning with the Model B the number was stamped on the flywheel housing. As Russ said some of the blocks came without numbers for various reasons. I do believe however that AA blocks were numbered. The good news is that the DMV is only interested in the number on the chassis. After they read it to verify that the vehicle is the one on the title they will assign their own number and attach a plate to the door jam such as in the picture. They will ignore any number on the engine (or missing number on the engine). Is your chassis number real? What and where is the number and how about a picture? Blank out the last 3 digits if you are concerned. I did on my photo. Does the number match your title?
