The car had been running good had good power I could get it to go to 52 mph. I bought a maze air filter with just metal mash filter and installed it. Know it doesn’t seem to run as good it lacks power I can only get about 45 mph now. Just. Want to know if anyone else has had this problem. I have tried adjusting carburetor and tried adjusting fuel knob inside and timing no luck. Still can only get 40 to 45 mph

I run that same filter on an otherwise stock engine and it’ll do 55 easily on relatively flat roads. I would suspect that you have another issue that adding the filter is exacerbating. Fuel mixture would be my guess. I would think adding the filter would make it run slightly richer. Just my 2 cents.

Stan, To determine if the filter is the problem or not, take the filter off and then test the car. The filter can restrict air flow and act as a choke. Both will lower the top speed. But the maze air filter should not restrict the air flow too much, so it may be something else as stated above. As Thodge said, the stock Model A should do 55 easily and I contend 65 as a top speed (but not for long).

What ratio rear end do you have, what year and body style, how long ago was the engine overhauled, etc.? All those will determine how well the car performs. If you want to improve your car's performance, a higher compression head is the most cost effective route.

The knob inside is called the GAV, which stands for Gas Adjustment Valve.

When I finish with a project and I or my A doesn’t like the results I put it back the way it was before ! Wondering what else you worked on when you installed the filter ? I would check and make sure the carburetor throttle plate is opening fully, the linkage on the backside of the motor can get bent up easily and not allow full range of movement at the carburetor

Tmarsh got it right.

Ive taken 3 off when having bought cars and wont put them back on. Fouled plugs and the like. They arent worth the effort.

I saw a loose spark plug cause a car to be limited to 30 mph at our club shed once. 25 foot pounds with a fresh crush washer fixed it. After a lot of wasted time we noticed a black streamer running back on the head. It was coming from the base of the plug.
