1931 fuel shut off valve question

Bought a new in car fuel shutoff valve but it only seems to thread into the tank 1&1/2 full turns. Does this sound correct? and also should yellow Teflon tape or pipe dope be used? Thanks in advance for all help. Harv.

I never use tape, but some dope should be ok. Remember to only apply dope to the male threads.

When I was a Pipefitter, we used both tape AND pipe dope, when we wanted a leak-free connection. My '31 was seeping gas from the shutoff valve threads, and it was trickling back into the cab when I first got it. The PO had not used anything on the threads. Dope and tape made it leak-free.

You could chase the threads with a tap a little at a time. My late 31 I had too!
