1930 North East Speedometer and Cable

I recently found a new old stock North East speedometer for my early 1930 Standard Coupe restoration. Even though the North East does not have the trip meter, I would love to use this speedometer because they're fairly rare, and I just like using different stuff that you don't see every day. I even found a new old stock dash panel, which does not have a notch for the trip meter.

What I'm asking the FordBarners for help with is the cable for this speedometer. It takes a different cable and cable housing than the Stewart Warner and/or Waltham speedometers.

If anyone has a cable and housing that they could photograph both ends for me, I would very much appreciate that. If anyone has one to sell, that would even be better! I owe lunch to the person who comes up with the photographs!

If you have references for people who collect, repair, restore, speedos and cables, let me know that as well. I've contacted many, but some of you folks may have contacts that I'm not aware of.

As always, thanks to the FordBarn participants.

Dave, I have one ...and might even be able to do you one step better. Here's the deal.

Pennie & I are leaving to go to South Carolina to watch my son race at the Grand Nat'ls this weekend, ...and then when we get back I am leaving on Monday for Hershey, PA. and I will be gone all next week so it will be a week or so before I can photograph it HOWEVER, I would be willing to send the entire cable to you for you to duplicate if itis indeed an authentic one. Then since you are building a fine-point car (and I probably would not use my speedo on that quality level of car), I will take whichever one comes out the worse if you have it duplicated.

I honestly do not remember what my unit looks like other than to tell you that the late Al Lepore restored it several years ago and it has been wrapped up ever since. And like I mentioned above, the one thing that I do not know is whether he made the cable or whether it is the 'real deal' but if you can wait a week, we'll explore it further.

Brent,

That sounds really nice. Thank you very much. I have no rush, the restoration will be very slow going. I'm not in any condition to do anythign in the way of actual work. So, I'm just doing what I can with checking parts against the Standards, seeing what I need, making contacts to search for parts, making lists, etc, etc. There's no rush on my end. Have a great trip, good luck at Hershey.

 Brent is right about the late Al Lapore rebuilding them. I would call Jr. at A+L's and ask him who really restored them. Al did send out some work on rebuilt parts to locale guy's in the neighborhood. I remember him telling me he stopped restoring this kind of speedometer. Maybe Jr. will know your answer on the cable question. As far as Al's part's sheet [Waltham & Northeast ovals not rebuildable] ,cable is listed as 28-29 keyed- 30-31 square.Good luck:)

Thank you for the replies. Once I get photos of the correct cable from Brent's original, I will move forward with one of the recommendations provided here. Things sure were slower before the Internet and FordBarn, eh?

Hi Dave...>Harry Warburton <metz1915@embarqmail.com>, did 2 for me already and did them in 48 hours.. Really nice work, Here is his cel 1-252-258-1530

Be well
Mark

Mark,
Thanks, but it's not the speedometer that needs work. It is new old stock and I've already dismantled, cleaned, lubed, and reasembled. The speedo needs nothing. It's the cable for the North East that I need. Harry doesn't have any, I checked. But thanks for the reply.
