1930 Generator Field Coils

The pictures are of, what I believe to be, a 1930 generator that I am rebuilding. My question involves the field coils. I presume that the field coils were originally wrapped. What should I use to re-wrap them? As you can see there was no wrapping present at disassembly. Some carbon dust did fell out. Could heat have destroyed the wrappings, and was that why the generator band was missing?

You'll need new field coils, as those have been cooked. The charging circuit most likely had a bad connection somewhere which allowed the generator output to run wild and put out up to 40 volts, which cooked the field windings.

Save the old windings for scrap, as the price of copper is high.

Thanks Tom. Some of the coating was falling off the armature winding. Should I replace that too? Looks like the rebuild will be easier than I thought - more expensive too. Bill

Sounds like the armature could be bad too. With the broken pulley, bad fields, and probably bad armature, I'd just buy another good used generator.

You'll need to test the armature on a growler, which any generator shop, or many of your club members probably have.
